A Parent’s Guide to the Skylife™ Phototherapy System

Congratulations on your new arrival! Your pediatrician has prescribed home phototherapy to help lower your baby’s bilirubin levels. Our goal is to provide the highest quality care while keeping your family together in the comfort of your own home.

What is the Skylife™ System?

The Skylife system is a state-of-the-art medical device that uses specific blue LED light to help your baby’s body break down bilirubin. Unlike hospital "overhead" lights, the Skylife is a soft, gel-padded surface that your baby lies on, similar to a bassinet mattress.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is it safe for my baby? Yes. The blue light is clinical-grade and does not emit harmful UV or infrared rays. The Skylife system is whisper-quiet and stays cool to the touch.

  • Can I still hold and feed my baby? Absolutely. We encourage you to take breaks for feeding, diaper changes, and brief cuddles. However, for the treatment to be most effective, your baby should spend as much time as possible on the light pad (ideally 20+ hours a day).

  • What should my baby wear? To maximize the light's effect, your baby should wear only a diaper while on the pad. We will provide soft eye-shields to protect your baby's eyes from the blue glow.

  • How long will treatment last? Every baby is different, but most treatments last between 24 to 72 hours. Your pediatrician will monitor daily blood tests to decide when it's time to stop.

  • What if I need help? You aren't alone! A Newborn Care Specialist will set up the equipment and show you exactly how it works. We are available 24/7 for technical support at 904-750-1344.

3 Tips for Success at Home

  1. Skin Contact: Ensure the baby’s back is directly against the gel pad.

  2. Hydration: Keep up with regular feedings (breast or bottle) as hydration helps flush bilirubin out of the   system.

Temperature: Keep the room at a comfortable temperature since your baby will only be in a diaper.
